The construction of this church and monastery
started in 1467 and the church was consecrated in 1484. The local
monastic order of Franciscans ranked among the most important ones
in the so-called Salvatorian province. Members of the monastic order
of Franciscans were active in Skalica to 1950 when they were forced
to leave. They claimed their property after 1989 in terms with
church restitutions. The buildings of this church and monastery were
rebuilt and extended several times in the past. Nowadays the
Franciscan complex consists of the building of the monastery
(partially used for commercial activities, it is the seat of the
district archives and music school), the church, the so-called
courtyard of paradise ( a well was reconstructed there a short time
ago), and a large garden. A demanding reconstruction of the nave
took place in 1993. A tomb slab including the Late Gothic text, the
oldest preserved text on some stone artefact in Skalica dating from
1488, was discovered during this reconstruction. Now you can see the
tomb slab next to the church entrance.
