The construction of the town walls started after
Skalica was awarded privileges of a “Free Royal Town“. They were
finished around 1435 and later they were reconstructed and rebuilt
several times. The fortification system lost its meaning in the 18th
century and so it was gradually falling into disrepair and it was
destroyed in some parts. Only several parts of the originally more
than two-kilometre-long town walls have been preserved up till now
in their original height – more than 8 metres. The walls were 180 cm
wide and they consisted of a high stone battlemented wall including
a gallery with loopholes on the inner side. The fortification system
included four gates. The two most important gates were Holíčska Gate
and Strážnická Gate placed on the medieval trade road.
