The building of this church started after 1372 but
it is possible that the construction was started on the foundations
of some older building. The original one-nave church was rebuilt in
the Late Gothic period (1450 – 1470). The result of this rebuilding
was a three-nave basilica. The church burnt down several times and
so it had to be rebuilt and reconstructed. The characteristic
impressive tower with the Late Renaissance arcade was added, the
side naves were vaulted over by the Baroque cross vaults and the
main nave was vaulted over by the barrel vaults with lunettes. The
impressive interior, the architecture of the altars and decorations
date mostly from the 17th and 18th centuries. The altar painting was
painted by Franz Anton Maulbertsch, an outstanding painter from
Vienna. The carved pews from the second half of the 18th century,
two inlaid confession boxes, the chandelier in the style of Art
Nouveau, and the nine side guild altars are worth seeing. This
church is the dominant element of the unusual triangular square.
